Can You Feel the Love Tonight

Songwriters: Tim Rice, Elton John
Performer: Elton John
Category: Contemporary

This is the famous love ballad from Disney's 1994 animated film The Lion King. It was a huge success that year (both the song and the movie), winning a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Original Song, and garnering Elton John a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Ideas were tossed around during the planning stages of the song as to who should sing it during the movie. It was originally slated to be sung by Timon & Pumbaa, but Elton John saw it as a romantic scene and didn't want it to turn into a comic moment. Then it was proposed to be a Simba/Nala duet, but that was also rejected in favor of the final version sung by a variety of off- and on-screen characters with English and African vocals. During the end credits, Elton John himself sings it.

I think this song works well as prelude or maybe unity ceremony music for an evening wedding, and I hear it working best as an instrumental, rather than a vocal performance.

LYRICS

There's a calm surrender to the rush of day
When the heat of the rolling world can be turned away
An enchanted moment, and it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior just to be with you

CHORUS
And can you feel the love tonight
It is where we are
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
And can you feel the love tonight
How it's laid to rest
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best

There's a time for everyone if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn
There's a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours

There's a calm surrender to the rush of day
When the heat of the rolling world can be turned away
An enchanted moment, and it sees me through
It's enough for this restless warrior just to be with you

CHORUS
