Cherish the Treasure

Songwriter: Jon Mohr
Performer: Steve Green
Category: Christian

Steve Green has had a long solo career in Christian music, with the release of his first album in 1984. He was known for his clear tenor voice, and has been nominated four times for a Grammy and won several Dove awards (the Christian version of the Grammy's). He has tended to stay on the conservative pop & hymn/worship style, and has also released several children's and Spanish-language albums.

This song comes from his sixth album Find Us Faithful, released in 1988. It was a popular choice for weddings in the late '80s/early '90s and while I thought it had faded from view after that, it still shows up consistently in suggestions for Christian wedding music. It is a simple, yet meaningful, declaration of the deep and committed love shared by a bride and groom, and is well-suited for a unity ceremony.

It is usually sung as a duet, since that's the original arrangement, it can be adapted for a solo singer as well.

I cherish the treasure
The treasure of you
Lifelong companion
I give myself to you
God has enabled me
To walk with you faithfully
And cherish the treasure
The treasure of you

As I obey the Spirit's voice
And seek to do His will
I then can see the wisdom of His plan
For as He works His will in me
I then can love you selflessly
And by His grace, can pledge my love
To you

This sacred vow I make to you
Does not contain an "if"
Though I'm aware that trials lie ahead
I will love you and pray with you
And through it all, I will stay with you
Our home will be a refuge of
Unconditional love
