I Swear

Songwriters: Gary Baker, Frank J. Myers
Performers: John Michael Montgomery, All-4-One
Category: Country, Contemporary

This is a song with crossover success in two musical styles - country and contemporary - hitting #1 in each genre's respective Billboard Hot 100 in 1994. All-4-One's version has one of the lines slightly altered from JMM's "and when there's silver in your hair" to All-4-One's "and when just the two of us are there."

A cute personal side story to this song: my husband gave me an anniversary card that when you opened it, had a sound byte of John Michael Montgomery singing part of this song. My toddler daughter was fascinated how the music started when she opened the card. I also pulled up the YouTube video so she could listen to the whole song, which she loved. Sometime later she would ask me for "ah-swee" which completely puzzled me until I realized that's what she thought JMM was saying! Now she periodically asks to see "Ah-swee on the 'pu-ler' (computer)."

I see the questions in your eyes
I know what's weighin' on your mind
But you can be sure I know my part
'Cause I'll stand beside you through the years
You'll only cry those happy tears
And though I'll make mistakes
I'll never break your heart

I swear
By the moon and the stars in the sky
I'll be there
I swear
Like a shadow that's by your side
I'll be there
For better or worse
Till death do us part
I'll love you with every beat of my heart
I swear

I'll give you everything I can
I'll build your dreams with these two hands
We'll hang some memories on the wall
And when there's silver in your hair
Won't have to ask if I still care
'Cause as time turns the page
My love won't age at all
