Open Arms

Songwriters: Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain
Performer: Journey
Category: 80s

Now here is the classic power ballad that is a favorite of weddings, proms and all things love-inspired. It first came out on Journey's 1981 album Escape - although it almost wasn't included in the album because of disagreements among the band members over it. They thought it was too much of a departure from their rock style to be doing a ballad like this. But it proved to be an absolute hit with audiences, and validated its inclusion.

It's been called by VH1 "one of the greatest love songs ever written" and "the greatest power ballad ever written".

Since then, the song has been recorded by many artists, most notably Mariah Carey in 1995 for her album Daydream, as well as Clay Aiken (during the 2003 semi-finals of American Idol and again with fellow Idol Kelly Clarkson in a joint 2004 concert tour), Barry Manilow, and Celine Dion (in her 2011 Las Vegas show). Country singer Collin Raye has recorded a country version of it also.

Sheet music (piano/vocal, can be piano solo)

Lying beside you here in the dark
Feeling your heart beat with mine
Softly you whisper, you're so sincere
How could our love be so blind?

We sailed on together
We drifted apart
And here you are by my side

So now I come to you with open arms
Nothing to hide, believe what I say
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me, open arms
Living without you, living alone
This empty house seems so cold
Wanting to hold you, wanting you near
How much I wanted you home

But now that you've come back
Turned night into day
I need you to stay
