Ave Maria (Schubert version)

Composer: Franz Schubert
Category: Classical

This is one of two famous musical settings of the Ave Maria (the other being the Bach/Gounod version). I did not realize this until I researched it, but Schubert did not set out to put the entire Latin text of the Ave Maria to his own music. He was simply setting a German translation of the Walter Scott poem "Lady of the Lake" which in its storyline has the heroine praying to the Holy Mother at one point. But the reference to "Ave Maria" in the poem must have triggered the idea in others to use Schubert's melody as the basis for setting the entire Ave Maria to his music.

At any rate, the result we know today is a beautiful, reverent piece of music, and has become a great choice for solemn or important occasions like weddings. It has been arranged and performed by a huge spectrum of musicians, from José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti to Joan Baez, Stevie Wonder and Barbra Streisand. It's also been featured in film, from Disney's Fantasia, to the Hitman movie and video game, and TV, including an episode of The West Wing.
