We've Only Just Begun

Songwriters: Roger Nichols, Paul Williams
Performer: The Carpenters
Category: 70s

Most people have heard We've Only Just Begun at some point over the years, but it had a rather interesting beginning before The Carpenters made it a hit in 1970.

Earlier that year, the Crocker National Bank in California was searching for a way to attract new, younger clientele to replace its aging customers. The bank's marketing agency proposed approaching some song writers to write songs about young people, which could be featured in a bank commercial. From that, a sort of modern day music video was shot of the song, with Paul Williams as the singer. The commercial showed a young couple getting married and starting out, and while there were no direct references to the bank itself (to keep the song more marketable), the concept was "you've got a long way to go, and we'd like to help you get there." The song then made number one on the Billboard charts, and Crocker National Bank saw a great influx of new customers.

When Richard Carpenter (of The Carpenters) saw the commercial, he approached Paul Williams to see if The Carpenters could record a full version of it themselves. They did, and included it on their album Close to You. Their version hit number two on the charts, with their other single Close to You at number one. And in 1998, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

LYRICS

We've only just begun to live
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
We've only begun

Before the risin' sun, we fly
So many roads to choose
We'll start out walkin' and learn to run
And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
Workin' together day to day, together

And when the evening comes, we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
Workin' together day to day, together, together

And when the evening comes, we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes, we've just begun
