What A Difference A Day Made

Songwriter: Stanley Adams (English lyrics)
Performer: Dinah Washington, various
Category: Golden Oldie

This song is even older than I thought - it was originally a popular song written in Spanish by Mexican songwriter Maria Grever in 1934, and was known as "Cuando Vuelva A Tu Lado" (When I Return To Your Side). The most successful early recording of its English version was also in 1934 by the Dorsey Brothers.

Dinah Washington really brought it into the limelight in 1959 when she won a Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance with it. Her version is even included in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Since then it has been covered numerous times by Diana Ross, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, Rod Steward, and Bobby Darin, among others. It's also cropped up in a variety of movie soundtracks such as Run Lola run, Faithful, Casino, Corinna/Corinna, One Fine Day and The Sunchaser.

LYRICS

What a difference a day made
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain

My yesterday was blue, dear
Today I'm part of you, dear
My lonely nights are through, dear
Since you said you were mine

What a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss

It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you

What a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss

It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you
