When You Say Nothing At All

Songwriters: Paul Overstreet, Don Schlitz
Performer: Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss, Ronan Keating
Category: Country

Overstreet and Schlitz actually wrote this song rather by accident, after a fruitless day of trying to write some new music. While they didn't think much of the song themselves, Keith Whitley loved it and recorded it in 1988. After his death, Alison Krauss recorded it in tribute to him in 1994. Then Irish pop singing Ronan Keating used it as his debut solo album in 1999 and sang it for the movie soundtrack Notting Hill

It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark
Try as I may, I could never explain
What I hear when you don't say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes sayin' you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd
Old Mr. Webster could never define
What's being said between your heart and mine
