You Light Up My Life

Songwriter: Joe Brooks
Performer: Debby Boone
Category: 70s

This was one of the most successful ballad singles of the 1970s, spending a then-record-setting 10 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was originally recorded by a woman named Kasey Cisyk to be lip-synched by the actress in the movie by the same name. Kasey never really got much credit for the song, but Debby Boone - who agreed to record the single - is the one who made it famous. She interpreted it as an inspirational song, though Joe Brooks wrote it as a love song.

Debby's rendition of it won her 1977's Grammy for Best New Artist and the American Music Award for Favorite Pop Single. The song also tied that year with Love Theme from "A Star is Born" (Evergreen) for Best Original Song in both the Golden Globe and Academy Awards.

So many nights I sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me
Alone in the dark but now
You've come along

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

Rollin' at sea, adrift on the water
Could it be finally I'm turning for home?
Finally, a chance to say hey,
I love You
Never again to be all alone

It can't be wrong
When it feels so right
'Cause you
You light up my life
