You Were Meant For Me

Songwriters: Nacio Herb Brown, Arthur Freed
Performer: Gene Kelly, others
Category: Golden Oldie

One of my all-time favorite Hollywood musicals is 1952's Singin' in the Rain, with Gene Kelly & Debbie Reynolds. This song hails from that movie (not to be confused with Jewel's song of the same name but completely different music).

The song itself has been around since 1929 when it was first published. Many singers of those golden years recorded it - Perry Como, Jackie Gleason, Gordon MacRae, and of course Gene Kelly. In more recent years, Sting recorded it for the 1998 film soundtrack The Object of My Affection.

Sheet music (piano/vocal, can be piano solo)

LYRICS

Life was a song
You came along
I’ve laid awake the whole night through
If I ever dared
To think you cared
This is what I’d say to you:

You were meant for me
And I was meant for you
Nature patterned you
And when she was done
You were all the sweet things
Rolled up in one

You’re like a plaintive melody
That never lets me free
But I’m content
The angels must have sent you
And they meant you
Just for me

But I’m content
The angels must have sent you
And they meant you
Just for me
