You're the Inspiration

Songwriters: Peter Cetera, David Foster
Performer: Chicago
Category: 80s

It's interesting to see how many hits came about in a hurry, off-the-cuff, or by accident. This song has all those elements.

Peter Cetera says that one morning in 1984 when he was ready to fly out that evening for a 2-week Italian trip, David Foster called him up with an urgent request from Kenny Rogers to write a song for him. That afternoon in between packing for his trip, Peter and David put their heads together and came up with a harmonic framework for the song. Then Peter flew out and spent some time in Italy mulling over the lyrics and melody. By the time he returned, David (or Kenny, it's not clear which) had lost interest in using it for Kenny, and so Chicago got the opportunity (and the fame). They released it on their Chicago 17 album.

LYRICS

You know our love was meant to be
The kind of love that lasts forever
And I want you here with me
From tonight until the end of time
You should know, everywhere I go
You're always on my mind, in my heart
In my soul

CHORUS
You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin'
No one needs you more that I need you

And I know, yes I know that it's plain to see
We're so in love when we're together
And I know that I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time
You should know, everywhere I go
Always on my mind, in my heart
In my soul

CHORUS
